Title: Architecture of Mesoscale Networks in the Primate Brain
Abstract: In human and nonhuman primate brains, information about our external and internal world are represented in maps organized at submillimeter scale (mesoscale). However, little is known about the organization of connections between these sensory, motor, cognitive, limbic and autonomic maps at mesoscale. To pioneer this direction, I have developed methods combining focal stimulation and ultrahigh field MRI imaging to map networks in vivo at high spatial resolution in the primate brain. I will present data that indicate brainwide mesoscale networks are topographic, specific, sparse, and exhibit canonical features. I suggest that complex primate behavioral repertoires emerge from elegant architectural frameworks, one which will have fundamental impacts on neuroscience, medicine, brain-machine interface, and AI.
