Title:
When information finds its value: value-based decision-making under social context
Abstract:
We live in the world of information overflow, and thus it would be one of the most difficult tasks to extract only the meaningful information out of the pool. Here at the talk, I am going to introduce two on-going studies where individual differences were observed in the process of using social information. First, I will talk about a probabilistic reward learning task where we recorded participants’ EEG signal during the task. I will share our preliminary results suggesting that individuals choose to use expectation error information obtained from social others in different time point at the game and that such tendency explains their psychological characteristics. Second, I will talk about a risky decision-making under social context. Specifically, we use computational modeling approach to examine behavioral choices in individuals with focal insula or dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) lesions, and show that individuals who fail to show consistent choice preference depend largely on social information in making choices. I will end the talk by raising a discussion point regarding why and to what extent individuals use (potentially uncertain) information from the social sources.
