Title: How to dissect neural networks with fMRI
Abstract: FMRI has been widely used to map brain functions in humans and animals. To understand brain computation further, it is critical to determine network direction of activation sites. Since fMRI relies on hemodynamic responses, the fMRI response is sensitive to an intrinsic hemodynamic response function at each region. Unfortunately, different brain regions may have different hemodynamic response functions, so it is not straightforward to extract dynamic difference of neural activities between regions from fMRI data. To obtain neural causality from fMRI data, we combined fMRI with optogenetics for silencing excitatory neurons at the targeted site. fMRI responses of somatosensory stimulation without and with inactivation in the primary sensory cortex allow us to separate the fMRI response from thalamocortical vs. from corticothalamic/corticocortical inputs. I will discuss our optogenetic fMRI strategies of transgenic mice and our preliminary findings.
