Title: "Awake mouse fMRI"
Rodent functional MRI (fMRI) has been widely used for functional mapping and dissecting basic properties of fMRI signals. While most rodent fMRI research is conducted under anesthesia or sedation, fMRI in awake rodent has recently shown unique advantages, particularly in mice. We developed robust sensory evoked awake mouse fMRI paradigms. Optimized preprocessing and analysis pipeline was developed for awake mouse fMRI. Using such pipeline, robust, specific and consistent BOLD responses were reported under somatosensory (whisker), auditory and olfactory stimulation. To further take advantage of the awake state, we demonstrated the first awake and behaving mouse fMRI paradigm, in which mice were imaged while performing an olfactory based Go/No-Go task. Furthermore, simultaneous electrophysiology and fMRI setup is being developed to examine neural correlates of dynamic functional connectivity. Overall, our work established the utility of awake mouse fMRI, and extended this method to probe cognitive and basic functions in the mouse brain.
